The backdrop to Mel Gibsons 1990 version of Hamlet, Dunnottar Castle is deeply impressive. Approximately 2 miles from Stonehaven, this castle seated atop a cliff top is steeped in history. Mary Queen of Scots is known to have stayed there.

Fowlsheugh cliffs are a haven to 160,000 birds in spring and summer. This nature reserve includes puffins, kittiwake and guillemot among many others. The best time to go is late April, when the birds arrive, to the end of July when the birds begin to migrate.
